Midvault belongs to the Kingdom of Albia and functions primarily as a trade waypoint between Albia and Grimrest. In recent years, however, the city has notably declined, becoming the subject of frequent jokes and mockery. The primary cause of this deterioration is attributed to Midvault’s adherence to strict and outdated laws and customs. Many residents have chosen to leave the city, feeling left behind as the world rapidly evolves beyond Midvault’s stagnant traditions.
City leadership has remained stubbornly resistant to change, primarily due to the advanced age and entrenched views of its rulers. The current leader, Cylus, is nearly 102 years old and embodies this resistance, steadfastly refusing to embrace innovation or modernization. Consequently, Midvault possesses no airships and maintains only a small number of blackpowder weapons.
A popular tradition that remains strong among residents is the weekly gathering to play croquet, a pastime deeply cherished throughout the city. Despite being firmly under the rule of Albia and the greater authority of Autumngrove, Cylus repeatedly attempts to declare Midvault a sovereign city-state. However, his proclamations of independence have never been taken seriously, even by Midvault’s own residents.
Nonetheless, Cylus remains convinced of Midvault’s autonomy. He annually hosts celebrations commemorating the city’s supposed independence, a tradition that is met with indifference and amusement rather than genuine patriotic spirit. Despite Cylus’s repeated gestures toward independence, Midvault consistently sends resources and capable individuals to support Albia whenever called upon.
Midvault is also notorious for its uninspiring cuisine and rather dull populace. Adding to his eccentricities, Cylus often claims to possess an exceptionally powerful pet, though no one has ever witnessed its existence. The citizens have grown weary of the tradition that city leaders rule until death, further contributing to the dissatisfaction and apathy permeating Midvault’s culture.
