Winthrop is the second-largest city in the Kingdom of Windmere, but it stands in stark contrast to the wealth and splendor of the capital. The ruling noble houses and the Windmere family have long prioritized consolidating power and resources within the capital, leaving Winthrop neglected and underfunded. The city’s infrastructure is crumbling, its defenses are weak, and the streets are poorly maintained.
A significant population of dwarves resides in Winthrop, most of them too young, old, or weak to work in the southern mines. Without steady employment or support from the crown, poverty runs deep. Food is scarce, and crime is rampant. Desperation has turned Winthrop into a dangerous place, where gangs and petty thieves prey on the vulnerable.
Many of Winthrop’s residents dream of escaping to a better life, but leaving the kingdom’s borders is nearly impossible without being captured or killed. The people are trapped, living under the shadow of the capital’s prosperity.
Despite the harsh conditions, the struggles of Winthrop remain hidden from the rest of the realm. Outsiders see only the wealth and glamour of the capital, assuming that the kingdom is thriving under Windmere rule. But beneath the surface, the people of Winthrop are suffering—and they know that the crown has no intention of helping them.
